Is Plastic Surgery Worth It? We look at 36 procedures

Is getting Plastic Surgery worth it?

For the most part, people considering Plastic Surgery are curious if it the result is worth the time, money, recovery period, possible complications, possibly dealing with new feelings and opinions of friends, etc, etc.

…is all of that worth it?

…is it worth the pain and money?

…is Plastic Surgery worth it?

The intent of this article is not to persuade you one way or the other but rather give you some insights and information to help you make an informed decision.

If I were to give you a list of 1,000 customers that all had Mommy Makeovers, for example, what would you consider to be a good Is Plastic Surgery Worth It? Infographicpercentage of those people who consider that “worth it”?

Would 90% be meaningful?

If 95% of patients said it was worth it, would that help you in your decision?

Do you expect to see 100% satisfaction?

Fortunately, there is a site that gives us this exact information. I have pulled info from that site and added it the table below as an overview of procedures, worth/not worth ratings, cost and numbers of reviews. This information is pulled Realself.

Take “Body Lift” for example:

A very high cost, very complex procedure, extensive recovery and yet 97% are satisfied out of 882 responses. Drilling into those responses, we see that 28 of them gave it a “Not Worth It” rating while 709 gave it a “Worth It” rating. 145 were undecided. For most business, a 97% “worth it” rating would be an earth shattering result. Imagine if Delta Airline or Apple Computers, as popular as they are, could achieve a point where their customer base have them a 97% satisfaction rating. Unheard of.

But with Plastic Surgery, indeed any medical procedure, we have much higher expectations, and rightfully so. This can be life or death, it can be lifetime of happiness or lifetime of misery, it can be lots of money well spent or it can be lots of money wasted. So a standard “customer satisfaction” rating doesn’t really apply. It’s more comparable to an airline pilot rather than the airline. A pilot who lands their plane 97% of the time is probably not considered a good pilot – I know I wouldn’t want to fly with them. So it is with doctors and surgeons – batting 97% may or may not be acceptable to the masses and really, it’s up to you to decide how you feel about it.

Is Plastic Surgery Worth It? Pros and ConsFor a 100% rating, I found only one and that is for Natrelle Breast Implants. Of 375 patients, 263 say it’s worth it while 112 are undecided. I would think that if you’re considering Breast Implants, this might be a good consideration.

On the other end of the scale, the lowest rating I could find is Smoothbeam Laser with a rating of 57%, average cost of $450 and 15 reviews. Smoothbeam is a laser skin resurfacing treatment usually used for acne or to help with sun damaged skin. Apparently, it doesn’t work very well. Certainly, if you’re looking for something along these lines, much more research is warranted.

So take a look at the table below – it’s solid info and gives good insights on satisfaction and even pricing. We tried to structure it so that you can find info about the “worth it” ratings easily in the table and then provided descriptions for the procedures below the tables. Links are provided for easy navigation.

Good luck!

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation surgery is any procedure that enhances the size and shape of a woman’s breasts. It’s frequently performed to enlarge a naturally small bust or to restore breasts that have been affected by pregnancy, weight loss, or aging. The procedure can be performed using implants (either silicone or saline) or fat transfer.

Tummy Tuck

Abdominoplasty (commonly known as a tummy tuck) removes excess skin and fat around the stomach while tightening the abdominal wall. The surgery is frequently performed after pregnancy or weight loss, when the skin has become stretched or saggy. A new belly button may need to be surgically created by umbilicoplasty. Other procedures such as liposuction or breast augmentation are often performed at the same time. This is commonly referred to as a mommy makeover.

Brazilian Butt Lift

A Brazilian butt lift (BBL) uses a person’s own fat to enhance the size and shape of the buttocks. A plastic surgeon first performs liposuction to remove fat from other areas of the body (often the stomach, hips, and thighs), then injects that fat into the backside. Additional liposuction can be done around the butt to improve the appearance of lift and contour.

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty (more commonly referred to as a nose job) is a surgical procedure that reshapes or resizes the nose. It can correct a variety of concerns, including a visible bump on the nasal bridge, a droopy or enlarged nasal tip, a nose that’s off-center or crooked, or asymmetry due to a previous injury. Those who don’t want to undergo surgery may consider a non-surgical nose job, which uses fillers such as Radiesse or Juvederm to smooth out humps and bumps.

Mommy Makeover

The mommy makeover (also known as a mummy makeover in the UK) is a combination of procedures designed to restore various parts of the body, particularly after pregnancy. It commonly includes a tummy tuck (to remove loose skin in the abdomen) and breast augmentation or a breast lift (to address breasts that have deflated or sagged). Liposuction may also be performed to help with body contouring.

Breast Implants

Breast implants add volume to existing breast tissue to create a fuller chest. Implant options include silicone or saline, rounded or shaped, and textured or smooth, all of which come in a variety of sizes. In addition to choosing the style of implant you want, there are several options for incision locations to consider.

Breast Reduction

A breast reduction involves the removal of excess fat, skin, and tissue, which usually results in the nipple and areola being shifted to a higher position. If the areola has been stretched due to the size of the breast, it may also be reduced. Not only does this surgery result in a smaller, perkier bust, it can also help eliminate the back, shoulder, and neck pain that’s often caused by large breasts.

Botox

Botox is an injection that temporarily relaxes facial muscles to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, as well as prevent new lines from forming. Common injection sites include the forehead, the area between the eyebrows, the corners of the eyes, and the sides of the chin. Botox can also be used for a wide variety of other conditions, including migraines, excessive sweating, and psoriasis.

Liposuction

Liposuction is an invasive procedure used to remove areas of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. Thin tubes called cannulas are inserted into the body, dislodging fat cells and suctioning them out. Lipo can be performed on various body parts, including the abdomen and waist, hips and thighs, and cheeks, chin, and neck. It’s important to note that liposuction is intended to improve body contour and not to significantly reduce weight, cellulite, or sagging skin.

Facelift

A facelift reduces wrinkles and sagging skin on the face and neck caused by aging or weight loss. The procedure removes excess skin, tightens the underlying muscles, and redrapes the skin in a higher position. The results go beyond what can be expected from wrinkle-fighting injections like Botox. Different types of lifts, such as cheek lifts or mini lifts, address specific concerns.

Breast Lift With Implants

A breast lift reshapes sagging or uneven breasts, which may have been affected by aging, pregnancy, or weight loss. The nipple and areola are often shifted to a higher, more youthful position. A breast lift with implants uses this same technique, while also placing silicone or saline breast implants for added volume.

Eyelid Surgery

Blepharoplasty (more commonly known as eyelid surgery or an eyelid lift) removes or tightens sagging skin around the eyes, resulting in a smoother, more youthful appearance. The procedure may also be used to create a crease where one is missing, such as with Asian eyelid surgery.

Breast Implant Revision

Breast implant revision surgery can address a variety of concerns following breast augmentation, including implant malfunction, capsular contracture, and dissatisfaction with breast size, among others. Revisions may involve changing the implant, fixing post-op sagging, or aligning asymmetrical breasts.

Juvaderm

Juvederm is an FDA-approved collection of injectable fillers used for a variety of reasons, including lifting the cheeks, smoothing marionette lines around the mouth, and plumping the lips. It may also be used to fill pitted acne scars or reduce the appearance of aging hands. Juvederm fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the skin. Results typically last between nine months to a year.

CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting is an FDA-approved, non-surgical procedure that uses a handheld device to precisely freeze and destroy fat below the surface of the skin. This treatment is not intended for significant weight loss, but for treating stubborn areas of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. Common treatment locations include the abs, love handles, inner thighs, back, arms, and underneath the chin.

Breast Implant Removal

Breast implant removal is a surgical procedure performed when a woman decides she no longer wants her implants. The surgery can address concerns like implant malfunction, capsular contracture, and dissatisfaction with breast size. It’s also commonly performed on women who have experienced sagging due to aging, pregnancy, or weight fluctuations. If a woman chooses not to replace her implants, a breast lift can be done at the same time to address skin that may have been stretched.

Smart Lipo

Smart Lipo is a variation on traditional liposuction that uses laser energy to liquefy fat before it’s removed through a thin tube called a cannula. This technique makes the fat easier to remove, making Smart Lipo a less aggressive procedure that may have a faster recovery timeline. In areas with thin layers of fat, like the face and the neck, the cannula might not be used at all. In this case, the liquefied fat is absorbed and naturally eliminated by the body. The procedure is not intended to significantly reduce weight, but to address fat that has been resistant to diet and exercise. This procedure may also be referred to as Smartlipo Laser Lipolysis or Laser Lypolysis.

Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction is most commonly performed following a mastectomy. Women who want to restore the volume and shape of their breasts may choose to get breast implants, tissue (commonly called “flap”) reconstruction, or a combination. Doctors tend to recommend tissue reconstruction for patients who have undergone radiation therapy, due to their increased risks for capsular contracture (a problematic scar tissue response to implants). Nipple reconstruction is also frequently part of the process.

Breast Lift

Mastopexy (commonly referred to as a breast lift without implants or a breast uplift in the UK) restores shape and volume that may have been lost due to age, weight loss, or nursing. With most breast lifts, the nipple and areola are shifted to a higher position in order to create a natural look. If you want larger (as well as perkier) breasts, a breast lift with implants might be worth researching.

Invisalign

Invisalign aligners are used to straighten crooked or crowded teeth, as well as close gaps and adjust overbites. The treatment involves wearing clear, plastic trays that are custom-designed for your mouth, making Invisalign a less-noticeable alternative to metal braces. For best results, it’s recommended that you wear the aligners at least 20 hours per day throughout your entire treatment, switching to a new set of aligners roughly every two weeks until you’ve reached your desired results.

Revision Rhinoplasty

Revision rhinoplasty can address complications or undesired results following an initial nose job. The procedure typically involves harvesting cartilage from the nasal septum or the ear to correct the defect. The unpredictability of secondary scar healing may make revision rhinoplasty a more complex procedure than the first one.

Restalyne

Restylane is an FDA-approved collection of injectable fillers used to treat moderate to severe facial wrinkles, smooth marionette lines around the mouth, and plump the lips. Restylane fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the skin. Results typically last between three to six months.

Mentor Breast Implants

Mentor’s FDA-approved breast implants come in both silicone and saline, as well as a variety of shapes, sizes, profiles, and textures in order to provide each woman a customized fit. The collection includes products that accompany breast augmentation, such as sizers, expanders, and dermal tissue for breast reconstruction. Mentor has a comprehensive warranty and product guarantee for its full line of MemoryShape® and MemoryGel® implants.

Sleeve Gastrectomy

A sleeve gastrectomy (also known as vertical sleeve gastrectomy) is an irreversible surgery to reduce the size of the stomach, thus promoting weight loss by reducing the amount of food you can consume. Unlike gastric bypass, it doesn’t alter the digestive tract. The procedure typically requires one to two days in the hospital.

Top of Page

Liposculpture

Like liposuction, liposculpture is a surgical procedure that improves body contour by removing fat cells between the skin and underlying muscles. The difference is that liposculpture typically involves removing or leaving fat in specific areas to create the appearance of muscle definition. When performed on the abs, this technique is commonly referred to as abdominal etching.

Top of Page

Hair Transplant

A hair transplant (also called hair restoration or hair implantation) permanently restores the hair by transplanting new follicles into balding or thinning areas. Healthy follicles are taken from other areas of the body, most often the back or the sides of the head. This can be done by removing a single strip of skin and hair or removing the follicles individually. The number of grafts needed depends on the patient and the size of the area being treated. A typical surgery involves anywhere from 1,000 to 3,000 grafts.

Body Lift

A body lift combines various procedures—frequently a butt lift, thigh lift, and tummy tuck—to lift and remove excessive skin. The procedure is typically performed following massive weight loss that has left skin stretched and saggy.

Top of Page

Vaser Liposuction

Vaser liposuction uses ultrasound energy to melt fat before it is removed through a thin tube called a cannula. This technique makes the fat easier to remove and may be especially useful in areas with larger volumes or denser fat. It also results in a less-aggressive procedure, which may lead to faster recovery times. This method does pose a risk for burns, and as with traditional liposuction, it’s not intended to significantly reduce weight, but to address fat that is resistant to diet and exercise.

Tattoo Removal

There are many options for those who want to get rid of a tattoo, including lasers, dermabrasion, or excision. Lasers are by far the most popular methods, with leading technologies including PicoSure and PicoWay.

Top of Page

Butt Implants

Like breast implant surgery, butt implant surgery involves the placement of artificial implants either over or under the muscle to enhance the size and shape of the butt. This treatment differs from the Brazilian butt lift, which uses a person’s own fat (liposuctioned from other areas of the body) to naturally augment the backside. This procedure may also be called a butt augmentation.

Male Breast Reduction

Gynecomastia is a swelling of the breast tissue in men or boys, caused by an imbalance of estrogen and testosterone. Gynecomastia may resolve on its own or be treated with medication. When more serious cases arises, the breast tissue and surrounding skin can be removed through male breast reduction surgery.

Top of Page

Lip Augmentation

Lip augmentation increases the fullness of the lips, using one of a variety of surgical or minimally invasive techniques. While the most popular methods use fillers such as Restylane or Juvederm, fat grafts, and lip implants may also be options.

Top of Page

Laser Liposuction

Laser liposuction is a variation on traditional liposuction that uses low-wave laser energy to liquefy fat before it’s removed through a thin tube called a cannula. This technique makes the fat easier to remove, resulting in a less aggressive procedure, which may lead to faster recovery times. In areas with thin layers of fat, like the face and the neck, the cannula might not be used at all. In this case, the liquefied fat is absorbed and naturally eliminated by the body. The procedure is not intended to significantly reduce weight, but to address fat that is resistant to diet and exercise.

Top of Page

Mini Tummy Tuck

Like a traditional tummy tuck, the mini removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen. However, this procedure focuses only on the area below the belly button, not the entire abdomen. This is often performed on women who have mild sagging or post-baby pooch, stretch marks from pregnancy, or C-section scarring. It can also be called a mini-abdominoplasty.

Top of Page

Arm Lift

An arm lift (also known as brachioplasty) tightens loose skin under the arm that creates what many call a “bat wing” appearance. It’s frequently performed on those who have sagging skin due to massive loss weight or natural aging. The procedure is often performed in conjunction with liposuction to get rid of excess fat.

Natrelle Breast Implants

Natrelle’s FDA-approved breast implants come in both silicone and saline, as well as a variety of shapes, sizes, and profiles to provide a customized fit. Natrelle offers a comprehensive warranty program guaranteeing free implant replacement for up to 10 years in the event of capsular contracture.

Is Plastic Surgery Worth it?

We’re right back where we started – is plastic surgery worth it? Only you can answer if it’s worth it to you but we hope that by sharing this information we can at least make the decision a bit less confusing for you.
