Frequently Asked Questions about Tummy Tucks, Mommy Makeover and Rhinoplasty procedures

Tummy Tuck:

How much does an Atlanta Plastic Surgery cost?

It depends on what procedure(s) you elect to have performed.  Procedures can run from $2,000-$10,000 each but having more than one at a time can consolidate those costs and end up saving you money as well as recovery time if you are able to have multiple procedures performed at the same time.  Take a look at our Cost Calculator to best determine Atlanta Plastic Surgery Prices as well as prices for other areas.

Tell me about the Tummy Tuck procedure

Usually a Tummy Tuck starts with either a general anesthesia or sedation.  When the patient is under the effects of the sedation, the surgeon will perform a long “smile shaped” incision from the left hipbone to the right, just above the pubic area.  Another incision is made around the navel to free it from the surrounding tissue and skin.  The skin is then detached from the abdominal wall, revealing the underlying abdominal muscles.  These muscles can be tightened and repaired as a part of the procedure.  After the muscles are repaired, the excess fat is removed, often using liposuction.  The remaining skin is then re-attached and stitched and bandages are applied.

How long does a Tummy Tuck procedure take?

Although each procedure can vary, the normal time to complete a Tummy Tuck is between 1-5 hours, depending on the scope of the work to be done.

How long is the recovery period after a Tummy Tuck?

The immediate recovery normally extends to about a month but full recovery whereas you can see the entire results and have full range of motion and use of your mid section can take 3-6 months.  For the most part, the one month after the surgery is a “safe” bet if you need to take time off of work.  Some can return sooner.

Mommy Makeover:

How much does an Atlanta Plastic Surgery cost?

What about scars?

There will be scars but they will be hidden in your clothes.  This is an area you definitely want to research your surgeon on – a good surgeon can hide the scars so they’ll barely be visible while wearing  a bikini.  The scars will initially be very red but will fade over time.

How long does a Mommy Makeover procedure last?

It depends (again).  A Mommy Makeover can consist of several different procedures, so it really does depend and you should talk to your doctor about the amount of time your specific procedures will take.  On the average, a Mommy Makeover consisting of a breast lift/implants and a tummy tuck can take from 4-5 hours with at least another hour in the recovery room.

My kids are young, should I wait until they’re older?

No, not really.  Women’s lives are usually greatly enhanced by the results of a Mommy Makeover procedure and this better lifestyle, confidence and abilities will directly translate into improved time with your children.  The caveat here is that if you are planning on having more children, it’s usually advisable to wait.  Not required, but advised.

What is the recovery time after a Mommy Makeover?

For the most part, the standard recovery time is 7-10 days, but of course even after this timeframe you must be careful to avoid heavy lifting or straining.  Also, a Mommy Makeover procedure usually consists of several different procedures.  The benefit of a Mommy Makeover is reduced overall healing time.  So instead of having a tummy tuck one month, a breast lift two months later and then another procedure, all of which require about 7-10 days of healing, having a Mommy Makeover consolidates that healing time into a single 7-10 days.

Rhinoplasty:

How much does an Atlanta Plastic Surgery cost?

What is the difference between Open and Closed Rhinoplasty?

“Closed” Rhinoplasty is performed in such a way as to ensure that all incisions are hidden within the nostril, so there is no external scarring.  The tradeoff here is that there is less the surgeon can do when using this method – fewer tools and procedures are available to the surgeon.  An “Open” Rhinoplasty, on the other hand, leaves a small scar that often times fade after a few months.  The benefits of an “Open” Rhinoplasty is vastly improved functionalities and tools available to the surgeon.  This is especially important if the patient has abnormal or challenging nasal anatomy.

Rhinoplasty sounds painful. Is it?

It shouldn’t be.  The patient is usually either under general anesthesia or IV sedation – the preferred method for most is general sedation as that enables close monitoring and management of the blood pressure during the operation which is critical for the success.  During IV sedation, the patient can come close to consciousness and thrash around – which is obviously not optimum during nasal surgery.  Under general anesthesia, the anesthesiologist can closely monitor the patient and ensure they are at a deep level of anesthesia.

Can I go home right after the Rhinoplasty procedure?

For the most part, patients are strongly advised to spend the night in the hospital to ensure there are no complications but also to ensure the first 24 hours are completely rested with no elevated blood pressure.  Any physical effort in the first 24 hours can negatively impact the cosmetic results so it is critical that the patient rest for 24 hours in the care and comfort of a controlled environment such as a hospital.

Can Rhinoplasty help me breathe better?

Surgeons that are trained in both cosmetic as well as functional nasal surgery are most adept at improving the looks of one’s nose while at the same time improving the nasal function and therefore the breathing.  It’s recommended that if you have breathing problems to ensure you speak with a cosmetic surgeon who is also trained on nasal function as well.

Is there an age restriction for Rhinoplasty?

Once a person’s nasal growth is complete, they are eligible for Rhinoplasty – this means that by age 16 or so.  The best age range to perform Rhinoplasty for the best and longest term results are adolescence to mid adulthood.  Although many still opt for the procedure later in life, history shows that in the 40’s and 50’s, the outcome is less favorable.  Unless it’s a medical necessity, it should be avoided later in life as the body’s healing abilities have decreased and there is a higher likelihood of disappointing results.

How long is the recovery period after a Rhinoplasty?

For those returning to work following a Rhinoplasty, you should give yourself at least one week’s recovery time for sedentary jobs and two or three weeks for jobs that require physical exertion.
